WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Ontario’s
Bruce Peninsula has some of the finest landscapes in Canada from the
panoramic Georgian Bay shoreline with its rugged cliffs, cobble beaches,
caves and azure waters to the lonely islands and lighthouses of the
Fathom Five archipelago. During this workshop we’ll visit the most
scenic locations where many of Ethan’s best landscape photos have
been created..
The
workshop follows a photographer's schedule which means being out at the
best spots for sunrise and sunset, when light is best for capturing
dramatic photos. Be prepared to rise early, rest mid-day and hike moderate
distances. This is the ultimate landscape photo workshop
with custom charted boat excursions to photograph sunrise
and sunset at amazing landscapes
only reachable by boat!
Our learning focus is on practical field techniques for creating stunning
landscape photos. We’ll work on aspects including: achieving depth of
field and sharpness; long exposures for dramatic lighting; composing with
interesting subjects and foregrounds; controlling image contrast with grad
ND filters or post processing exposure bleeding. Above all else, however,
we’ll be out to experience amazing locations with rich photo
opportunities!

SUGGESTED CAMERA GEAR
- Camera:
SLR camera (digital or film).
"Point &
Shoot" cameras are welcome, but they have some limitations in comparison.
- Lenses:
Any wide angle or standard lens such as: 17-40mm, 16-35mm, 10-22mm,
24-100mm, or similar). If you have a medium telephoto (ie. 70-200mm or
100-300mm range), bring it for isolating landscape elements.
- A
sturdy tripod and head (ball-head suggested). Ethan has a couple of
spares, check with him if you need to borrow one.
- Filters:
Circular polarizer (highly suggested). Ethan uses the LB warming
circular polarizer by Singh-Ray. Graduated ND grads if you have them
(ie. 2-stop soft edge, 2-stop hard edge, 3-stop soft edge, 3-stop soft
edge). Ethan will have a selection of Singh-Ray grads on hand to
share. Some photographers may prefer to blend exposures (ie. HDR) in
post processing, instead of using grads.
- Cable
release (or you can use your self-timer).
- Lots
of digital memory or film.
- For
digital photographers, a laptop is suggested for editing and digital
photo prep during the evening. Ethan will have his laptop available
for downloading and burning to CD or DVD in the evenings.
WEATHER & CLOTHING
Weather can be
variable on the Bruce Peninsula in September, so bring a range of
clothing.
Early mornings and evenings may be cool. Pack comfortable hiking
gear, sturdy hiking boots, a water/wind proof shell (ie. Gore-Tex), rain pants and fleece. We will
photograph rain or shine but adapt our schedule according to weather
issues.
