Tour Description

Ontario's Bruce Peninsula has some of the finest scenery in Canada, including the spectacular Georgian Bay shoreline with it's rugged cliffs, myriad caves and azure waters. Ethan lived on the Bruce Peninsula for 9 years and searched out the best locations. During the workshop, we'll visit the most scenic locations where many of Ethan's hallmark landscape photos have been taken.

This tour follows a photographer's schedule, which means being out at the best spots for sunrise and sunset, when the light is best for making dramatic landscape photos. Be prepared to rise early, rest mid-day and hike moderate distances. Meals are at quality Tobermory restaurants. Saturday evening we we'll enjoy fine dining at the Grandview restaurant overlooking Georgian Bay!

The learning focus of the tour is on practical field techniques for shooting landscape scenes. We'll touch on aspects such as:
-achieving depth of field and sharpness
-long exposures for dramatic lighting
-composing with interesting subjects and foregrounds
-controlling image contrast (ie. bright skies) with grad ND filters or post-processing exposure blending
But most importantly, we'll get to out to some spectacular locations with rich photo opportunities!

The small group size allows Ethan to spend time with each participant to help address specific learning needs and interests.

Join quickly to ensure a spot!

What Gear do you Need?

  • Camera: A 35mm-style DSLR camera or a film camera. Point and shoot cameras are acceptable, but they have limitations.
  • Lenses: Any wide angle or standard lens such as: 17-40mm, 16-35mm, 10-22mm, 24-100mm, or similar). If you have a medium telephoto (ie. 70-200mm or 100-300mm range), bring that for isolating landscape elements.
  • A sturdy tripod and head (ball-head suggested). Ethan has a couple spares, check with him if you need to borrow one.
  • Filters: Circular polarizer (highly suggested). Ethan uses the LB warming circular polarizer by Singh-Ray. Graduated ND grads if you have them (ie. 2-stop soft edge, 2-stop hard edge, 3-stop soft edge, 3-stop soft edge). Ethan will have a selection of  Singh-Ray grads on hand to share. Some shooters may prefer to blend exposures in post processing, instead of using grads.
  • Cable release (or you can use your self-timer).
  • Lots of digital memory or film.
  • For digital shooters, a laptop is suggested for editing and digital photo prep during the evening. Ethan will have his laptop available for downloading and burning to CD or DVD in the evenings.

Many participants worry that they don't have enough gear for the workshop. Stop worrying! The beauty of the workshop is that you'll have a chance to try out Ethan's gear, or share with other participants. You can decide after if it's worth investing in a new piece of gear, based on what you learn at the workshop. If purchasing photo gear before the tour, please contact Ethan for suggestions.

Clothing/Weather
Weather can be variable on the Bruce Peninsula, so be prepared. Early mornings and evenings may be cool. Pack comfortable hiking gear, sturdy hiking boots, a water/wind proof shell (ie. Gore-Tex), rain pants and fleece. We will photograph rain or shine!
